Angina is experienced as pain. It may be felt as a deep sharp central chest pain that you can mistake as indigestion. Angina is typically experienced when you are active and the pain will pass quickly at rest. Other types of chest pain will continue when you rest but all chest pain must be investigated. Angina is a warning sign that your big, active heart muscle is not receiving enough oxygen to work properly. Recognising angina pain, acting on it and then reversing heart damage is quite simply the difference between life and death.
The heart is a complex pump and it moves blood around the body and to the lungs to collect oxygen. But it cannot receive oxygen or nutrition from the blood passing through it. Instead it receives these via large coronary arteries. These arteries should be clean and free of debris but poor lifestyle factors such as smoking, lack of exercise and a diet that is high in sugar and animal fat will affect them. The arteries suffer damage and start to collect debris. Over time this debris accumulates and can cause the arterties to become narrow. This prevents large volumes of blood reaching the heart muscle to nourish and protect it. The heart muscle becomes distressed and goes into spasm causing pain that can be intense and frightening.
Angina is an early warning sign that coronary heart disease is developing. It indicates a high risk of future heart attack. Not everyone with heart disease will experience angina. Many people have a heart attack without the benefit of earlier warning pain. So angina is an opportunity to correct a problem. Your GP and health practitioner will work with you to achieve better heart health. All recommendations are focused on lifestyle, diet and nutrition, smoking, exercise and managing stress.
Foods & herbs for the home
- Artificial trans fats have been withdrawn from processed foods in Europe and the healthy emphasis is now focusing on plant-based fats and oils that do not clog up the arteries with debris. Coconut oil, cold-pressed nut oils, nut butters, olive oil and flax seed oils are now available in supermarkets as well as health food stores and are superior fat and oil choices. Many have higher ratios of essential omega 3, 6, 9 oils, which can support heart health.
- Cholesterols have had a mixed press but we know that we need a good form for brain health, managing depression and producing good levels of hormones. An excess of animal products in the diet may increase levels of the 'bad' cholesterol that causes artery problems – examine the amount of meat, cheese, cream, ice cream, chocolate etc. that you eat on a daily basis.
- Some foods are easier to substitute than others. Oily fish can replace meat. Oat milk, nut milks or coconut milk can replace dairy milk, and olive oil can replace margarine and butter.
- The onion family has a unique effect because it mops up cholesterol to remove it from the blood. Garlic can be very effective. Download the free "Garlic" book by Jill Davies to learn more. Consume as much garlic as you can tolerate, as well as leeks, onions and spring onions. If you are taking blood-thinning medication please check with your doctor because garlic can assist blood thinning naturally and it may be possible to lower your drug dose.

- Spices offer another food approach. Many have a long traditional use for reducing inflammation and supporting the heart. Cayenne pepper and Turmeric Powder are two spices that are easy to buy and are inexpensive. You can combine them in a salt shaker and simply add them every day to foods: sprinkle on top of a baked potato, baked beans, soups, wholemeal rice and vegetables. Cayenne Tincture is also available.
- Examine food labels and replace all foods that contain high fructose corn syrup. There is ample evidence that obesity (and heart disease) is profoundly influenced by this undesirable sugar.

- Managing stress is a key part of recovery from heart disease. Body work such as massage can enhance the body-mind connection to promote full person healing.
